2014 Volkswagen Tiguan R-Line

2014 Volkswagen Tiguan R-Line

2014 Volkswagen Tiguan R-Line

The Tiguan pledged Volkswagen’s R-Line fraternity way back in 2008, survived the hazing and humiliation to become a certified member of the ancient German trim-package society (by “ancient,” we mean 10 years old). The 2014 Tiguan R-Line is the scion of that first-generation compact crossover and joins the Touareg, Beetle and CC in the brotherhood.

What it provides is better looks for the same heart: every Tiguan carries a 2.0-liter four-cylinder TSI engine up front, turbocharged and intercooled, sending the same 200 horsepower and 207 pound-feet either to the front wheels or to all four via a Haldex-clutch-equipped 4Motion system. Volkswagen touts the option of a six-speed manual or six-speed automatic, but such buyer discretion only applies to the front-wheel-drive model. If you want 4Motion, you have to get the automatic, and the R-Line cannot be had with a manual. Both FWD and AWD models are rated at 26 highway miles per gallon, but in the city, the manual FWD returns 18 mpg, the automatic FWD gets 21 mpg and the AWD gets 20 mpg – none of which is terribly pleasing for a compact crossover, particularly when premium fuel is recommended.

Subaru ending Tribeca production in January?

The writing has been on the wall for some time, but it seems that Subaru is finally pulling the lever on the guillotine to put the midsize Tribeca crossover out of its misery. Jalopnik has what appears to be a communication from Subaru to its dealers announcing that the final Tribeca will roll off the Lafayette, IN assembly line in January, with the last dealer delivery expected to occur the following month.

The last report we heard regarding the Tribeca said that Subaru could be planning a fullsize, three-row crossover, possibly to compete against the Nissan Pathfinder and Ford Explorer. Dropping the Tribeca would leave the automaker without a three-row crossover for the foreseeable future, but according to the memo, Subaru has sold just 78,000 Tribecas since 2005 making it one of the worst-selling vehicles in the US in 2011 and 2012 – for comparison, the automaker has already found 84,372 customers for its new Forester this year (through September) alone.

We have reached out to Subaru for comment on the Tribeca’s passing, but have yet to hear back as of this writing. Stay tuned for an update, when and if we get word.

SRT holding contest to name new Viper color

SRT holding contest to name new Viper color

SRT holding contest to name new Viper color

Like every decision involved in a new car, picking the names of the color palette is a delicate process. The name of a paint option means more to buyers than you might think, which is why automakers go to great lengths to pick the right color name and why we sometimes wind up with silly names like Bulldozer (yellow-orange) on the Jeep Wrangler, Red Alert! (and yes, the exclamation is supposed to be there) on the last-generation Nissan Versa, Alien (green) on the Kia Soul and Nobel Spinel Mica (red) on the Lexus LS.

If you’re like us, though, you can look at a Nobel Spinel Mica or Alien and figure you can do better, like Imperial Garnet for the LS or Salamander Lime for the Soul. And if you’ve ever thought you could do better than what the OEMs put out, here’s your chance. SRT is running a contest to pick the name for a vibrant, but non-metallic, blue that will be available on both the SRT Viper and SRT Viper GTS. The eventual winner will get an all-expenses-paid trip for two to the 2014 Rolex 24 at Daytona.

The contest opened today, and will run through October 24. If you’ve got a good idea for a name, you’d best hop over to the SRT website and submit it. The Autoblog team was beaten to the punch on submitting its choices – Gilles Blue (after SRT boss and car buff Ralph Gilles) and Blue Racer – don’t let the same happen to you. Click below for the entire press release from SRT.

Aston Martin committed to V12 power, downplays hybrids

Aston Martin committed to V12 power, downplays hybrids

Aston Martin committed to V12 power, downplays hybrids

Aston Martin will not be joining the performance hybrid club currently being championed by the likes of Ferrari, Porsche and McLaren. As evidence, Dr. Ulrich Bez, CEO of Aston Martin, has made some very pointed remarks about the supercar segment’s move to hybridization, telling Australia’s Drive, “We will not have a hybrid in next year or year after.” Instead, the British brand will focus on aerodynamics, engine efficiency and reducing curb weight, all in a bid to boost performance without adding the cost or complexity of hybrid systems. But the strategy extends beyond those simple reasons, with Dr. Bez citing philosophical and practical issues with hybridization.

“I am a purist and I think a sports car should have as low weight as possible. It should be in as minimalistic as it can be and this does not work with hybridization,” Bez tells the Australian website. As for his practical oppositions, Bez added, “I think it is great technology, but if you think about the biggest failures in cars these days it is electrical failures. And what we do is make more electrical systems and we believe it will be much better.” The outspoken CEO finished by saying, “I think a pure sports car does not need this.”

For the future of Aston Martin, Dr. Bez reiterated his support for its twelve-cylinder heritage, saying, “I do believe [the V12] is very dear to us.” He adds, “If it comes to a luxury car with emotion, a V12 has something special. This will still be there within the next five to 10 years, but it does not mean it will be six liters – it can be five liters or a smaller one. It will improve with power and fuel consumption.”

Dr. Bez’s views are interesting, notably because Astons are generally underpowered relative to their competition – the Vanquish has 565 horsepower to the 740-horsepower Ferrari F12 and the Rapide S is outgunned by far more affordable competitors from BMW, Mercedes-Benz and Porsche. Not to be cynical, but we’re guessing Bez’s position is as much rooted in philosophy as it is in financial reality – Aston isn’t exactly flush with cash these days, and developing a hybrid powertrain system sounds significantly costlier than sticking to its knitting. The question is, will the strategy work over the long haul? Have your say in Comments.

Mazda MX-5 GT gets green light

Mazda MX-5 GT gets green light

Mazda MX-5 GT gets green light

The Mazda MX-5 Miata is as popular around the Autoblog offices as Kate Upton posters are around fraternity houses. Few staffers have much criticism for Mazda’s ubiquitous roadster, and fewer still aren’t overjoyed when one arrives in their driveway. So you can imagine how a report from Auto Express about a more potent MX-5 model is going over in our offices today.

The new model, which was shown in concept form as the Mazda MX-5 GT at the Goodwood Festival of Speed, has a slight catch, though. First, we have absolutely no idea if Mazda will bring the MX-5 GT to the US. Secondly, and perhaps more problematically, this isn’t a production car – it’s a kit from the team at Jota Sport.

Now, to be fair, the kit doesn’t sound like a bad thing. It bumps the UK-spec 2.0-liter, 157-horsepower engine up to 203 hp thanks to a sports exhaust and a revamped ECU (46 horsepower from an ECU and exhaust in a naturally aspirated car?). To make the little Miata even more agile, Jota has also fiddled with the suspension. AE doesn’t mention things like the grippy tires or Recaro seats that were found on the concept, though.

What concerns us is the cost of converting an MX-5 to an MX-5 GT. AE seems to think the GT should retail for under £30,000 (around $48,000 USD), which includes the £18,495 ($29,800) donor car. If the kit comes to the US, though, it will likely cost a lot less than that.

How much would you be willing to spend on an MX-5 GT? The base car starts at $23,720 for a Sport Softtop, but let’s assume you want to go with the $26,905 Club Softtop to get the six-speed manual transmission. What’s the right price for the GT package, installed and with its three-year warranty? Let us know in Comments.

Lamborghini officially reveals new Veneno Roadster

Lamborghini officially reveals new Veneno Roadster

Lamborghini officially reveals new Veneno Roadster

Sexy or vulgar – whatever you thought of the Veneno which Lamborghini unveiled at the Geneva Motor Show this past March, it didn’t much matter. Because by the time we saw it, all three examples were already bought and paid for… at the equivalent of $3.9 million each. But if you had that much cash burning a hole in your pocket and lamented missing out on the opportunity to put one in your driveway, we’ve got good news, because Lamborghini has just confirmed another nine examples to be built. Only this time, it’s got no roof.

Now officially confirmed after leaking out the other day, the Lamborghini Veneno Roadster features the same radical styling, extreme competition-derived aerodynamics, carbon-intensive construction and twelve-cylinder powertrain as the coupe that proceeded it and which we enjoyed photographing for your viewing pleasure just last month. The principal difference, of course, is the open-air cockpit, which offers no protection from the elements whatsoever: no fabric umbrella contraption, no removable glass or metal panel, nothing to get between your dome and the air rushing by at 220 miles per hour. That’s the same top speed as the coupe, while the 0-62 run takes just a fraction of a second longer at 2.9 seconds. But we doubt you’d notice the difference with that 6.5-liter V12 revving just behind your ears.

It’s the same engine and seven-speed ISR gearbox that powers the Aventador, only tuned up to 750 horsepower for the Veneno. And it should have more power, because at 3.3 million euros (about $4.5 million, give or take a Gallardo), the Veneno Roadster isn’t just $600,000 more expensive than the Veneno coupe, it’s also more than ten times the price of an Aventador. Still with us? You can scope out all the details in the press release below and browse through the photos in the gallery above for a closer look.

2014 Chevrolet Camaro SS Convertible

2014 Chevrolet Camaro SS Convertible

2014 Chevrolet Camaro SS Convertible

I first caught a glimpse of the 2014 Chevrolet Camaro in person at the New York Auto Show, and the Convertible version (by way of pictures) at its far-flung debut in Germany. As a car writer, a V8 enthusiast, a convertible diehard and, most days, no fool, I’ve wanted to get my turn in this very car ever since.

The Camaro SS Convertible rumbled up to my door in 2SS trim, meaning my first go with the deeply attractive pony car would lack for neither bells nor whistles, nor imposing 20-inch aluminum wheels. While undoubtedly pricey, fully loaded with a manual transmission is a great way to buy this car. What’s more, the middle of the Michigan autumn is pretty much the perfect time to have the keys to it in your pocket.

Concept cars:Citroen Teases With Its New DS3 Cabrio

The car is due to show in Paris in September but the company have decided to show off their most recent incarnation online to get us at excited about the big unveil.

The DS3 has some solid improvements on its predecessors, which is impressive given it’s already been hailed as one of the most stylish small cars on the market. On top of being lavishly spacious like its forebears, the new cabrio adds that touch of nomadic je ne sais pas: there’s something deliciously flippant about rolling down the roof of your car with the push of a button and having the (albeit cool) air flick around your hair as you cruise along. The retractable roof itself is a lush affair, woven of three fabrics and in turn being highly customisable. This can only appeal further to the stylish set who’ve already got their eyes set on Citroen’s recent output. It pushes the boot space down by a measly 40litres, which is entirely liveable-with unless you have a worrying case of shopaholism.

The interior carries on where the exterior starts: leather upholstery is matched by stylish curves and ambient lighting. It’s all sleek metal and plush seating, beautifully jarred and yet deeply inviting. The DS3 cabrio seems a logical step for Citroen, what with there being little way to improve on what was already a great car. Our only hope, and it is a weak one, is that there are enough rainless days in our future to merit buying the DS3.

Concept cars:The New Ford Fiesta ST

Since the Ford bestseller was released in 2008, the powerful minicar has swept the nation and now everyone, including us here at Carhoots, is getting excited about the new, bolder, more advanced Ford Fiesta ST due on sale in 2013.

As expected and hoped for, the new Fiesta is still going to be one of the most thrilling and fun minicars out there. With Fords reputation for building great-handling cars, the Fiesta ST definitely steps up to the challenge. The 1.6-litre Ecoboost engine can allow the small car to reach 62mph in less than seven seconds. There is a range of other powerful yet fuel-efficient engines for both petrol and diesel available too. Moreover, a new hi-tech smart info system is installed in the car which helps you drive more efficiently. The Fiesta has been known for being a good value car; starting at £9,795 the car is still lower than its main rival VW Polo GTI. We feel the Fiesta successfully provides a harmonizing balance of performance, economy and low emissions.

The Ford Fiesta has already been given multiple design awards, for its dynamic, striking style and sophisticated and detailed interior. The new Fiesta is even more innovative and distinctive. With a range of new features that add to the cars trademark style and enhance the Fiesta driving experience. Here we’ve decided to name a few cool hi-tech features of the car that stand out:

-No rummaging for keys, the Fiesta senses where they are and unlocks itself when you are near. The engine can then be started with the push of a button – effortless!

-The Bluetooth voice control installed can be used for almost everything, making calls, picking music to listen to…

-Electric Power-Assisted Steering (EPAS) that provides greater maneuverability and control as it automatically adjusts steering to suit the situation.

-Great for listening to music with the high quality Sony DAB audio system, and easy-to-use USB port for connectivity.

-Rear view camera and sensors to make driving and parking safer and easier.

Safety is actually an important thing to bring up, as the Fiesta despite being such a small car is in fact an incredibly safe car! With technology such as the Electronic Stability Programme (ESP) which constantly monitors the car’s conditions, it has been awarded a 5 star Euro NCAP for adult occupant safety, 4 stars for child protection and 3 stars (out of 4) for pedestrian protection.

If you’d like to get a better look at the new Fiesta ST then we’d recommend you check out the 360 view of the car here The streamlined, “kinetic design” and shape of the car was intended by the creators to make the car seem as if it is moving even when stationary. Have a look!

Concept cars:The New Vauxhall ADAM

Supermini fans will love the unique stylish design of the new Vauxhall ADAM due to arrive in UK showrooms January 2013. Unlike its competitors MINI and FIAT 500, ADAM offers buyers a much more personal touch with over one million different styling combinations to choose from. Its unique image along with the hi-tech gadgets you’ll find inside (such as ultrasonic sensors for advanced parking assistance) is what makes ADAM so interesting. However we must say, here at Carhoots, we find name is slightly disappointing. Named after the company founder Adam Opel, we would have expected something a little more exciting or unusual for such a distinctive car.

Described as classy, glamorous and sophisticated, this three door car has three different trims for their launch:

JAM (Fashionable, Classy):

GLAM (Elegant, Sleek):

SLAM (Bold, Sporty):

ADAM should be selling for around £11,000 in the UK and will offer a choice of 3 efficient EcoFLEX four-cylinder petrol engines: a 1.2 litre, 70PS engine and two 1.4 litre engines of either 87PS or 100PS. All will be available with an optional start/stop technology and coupled with a five-speed, manual gearbox. ADAM also boasts a panoramic “floating” roof that’s visually disconnected from the body.

Bikes:2SRD BY ANALOG MOTORCYCLES

The 2SRD is a unique take on the classic Yamaha RD350 although with the amount of work and the sheer number of major changes, you can’t really call this an RD350 anymore. Built by Tony Prust of Analog Motorcycles the bike started life as another man’s project bike, he had planned to modify it into a café racer but never got around to finishing it.

It was bought unfinished by the current owner and sent to Tony in Illinois looking rather worse for wear and requiring a complete rebuilt. The team at Analog set about stripping the bike back to it’s bare components before deciding to continue down the cafe racer road, the neck tube was unceremoniously angle-grindered off to be replaced by a Ducati S2R unit, this allowed the use of a more advanced pair of S2R forks and triple tree.

The final colour scheme of black on white works incredibly well on the 2SRD, as does the minimal design aesthetic and high level of attention to detail. In some respects it seems like this bike belongs in a modern art museum or in the lobby of an industrial design firm, although thankfully it gets ridden daily by it’s owner, no doubt turning heads wherever it goes.

BMW teases 2 Series Coupe ahead of October 25 debut

Although it was finally just confirmed that the last of the BMW 1 Series coupes and convertibles went out of production months ago, we won’t have to wait very long to see this model’s replacement, the all-new 2 Series. BMW released a teaser video for its new coupe today and also announced that the 2 Series will officially debut on October 25.

We may still have to wait until the Detroit Auto Show to see it up close and in person, even though both the Los Angeles Auto Show and Tokyo Motor Show are nearly upon us. Either way, it’s not clear when the 2 Series will roll into dealerships. Considering we’ve already seen the coupe sitting out mostly undisguised for a photo shoot, there really isn’t much to see in terms of styling of the car in this sun-drenched, dirt-slinging teaser. BMW does say that this is the first trailer ahead of the 2 Series’ unveiling, so there are likely to be more to follow the video seen below.

Ford going bonkers at SEMA with 57 showcars

Ford always shows up in force at the SEMA Show, but this year’s tally of 57 custom-tuned cars, trucks and vans is more than we can ever recall the Blue Oval bringing. Ford will introduce 28 of its project vehicles in its “Dreamcase” ahead of next month’s show. The first batch of eight you’ll find here with the remaining vehicles trickling into public view over the next couple of weeks.

This first group of cars includes a Fiesta, four Fiesta ST hatchbacks and a trio of Mustang show cars styled and tuned to varying degrees all by different aftermarket companies. Tanner Foust, Nitto Tire, 3dCarbon and Ice Nine Group are some of the more familiar names affixed to these cars. Our favorite so far is the Hollywood Hot Rods Mustang convertible (shown above) with its removable aluminum top and methanol-injected, 750-horsepower 5.0-liter V8.

Scroll down for all the details on these Fiestas and Mustangs, and stay tuned for more info on Ford’s SEMA line, which will include custom versions of the Focus ST, Fusion, Transit Connect, F-150 and Super Duty.

Mini officially reveals Frozen Black Countryman and Paceman

BMW has been offering Frozen editions of its cars for several years now highlighted by matte paint and very limited production, and now Mini is getting in on the game with Frozen Black versions of the Paceman and Countryman. Unlike our report from earlier in the week, these models will not wear the Batman-sounding Black Knight name, but instead, like the BMW models, will be dubbed Frozen Edition. That previous intel also had it that production of the Frozen Edition Minis would be limited to just 60 units. Now official, Mini has not confirmed how many – or few – of these limited edition models it would build.

The Frozen Black paint adds silicates to the lacquer finish creating a “matted impression,” which sounds like it should be easier for owners to maintain and wash, although Mini still advises against waxing or polishing. This special paint will be offered on all S, Diesel and John Cooper Works versions of the Paceman and Countryman, though it’s not clear as of this writing if any will be offered in the US. Mini’s press release for the Frozen Black Paceman and Countryman is posted below.

Mercedes reveals new seven-seat Citan Crewbus

Even though the commercial vehicle segment here in the US is still dominated by American automakers, Mercedes-Benz continues to be a top automaker for global work vehicles, including its recently introduced Citan. Built as a part of the Daimler-Renault alliance and sharing its design with the Renault Kangoo, the Mercedes-Benz Citan gets some notable upgrades including an optional diesel engine, available custom body conversions and a new stretched, seven-passenger model.

Going on sale next spring, the Citan Crewbus (shown above) adds a third row of seating with two seats in the back that can slide fore or aft to maximize passenger comfort, or they can be removed altogether for more cargo space. Currently, the Citan is only sold in Europe, but that will soon expand to include Asia, Chile and the Middle East. We asked a Mercedes spokesperson if there’s a chance we’ll ever see the Citan in the US to compete against small commercial vans like the Ford Transit Connect, Nissan NV200 and Chevrolet City Express, and the response was that there are “no plans” to do so.

Scroll down to check out the press release as well as galleries for both the new Crewbus and other variants of the 2014 Citan.

2014 Jaguar F-Type, Project 7 Concept snarl in Jay Leno’s Garage

Jay Leno gets to drive a lot of nice cars, and the Jaguar F-Type V8 S he pilots in the latest episode of Jay Leno’s Garage is no exception. Eric Johnson, vice president of Jaguar Western Region brought the car to Leno’s garage, which impresses the comedian with its 5.0-liter V8 that makes 495 horsepower, 460 pound-feet of torque and a muscle car-like roar.

But there’s a surprise this episode: Leno secured a drive in the Project 7 Concept at Pebble Beach this year, and the experience was caught on video. Based on the F-Type, the Project 7 is a functional concept car that nods to Jaguar’s seven wins at Le Mans and features bespoke styling cues, a special exhaust system and, perhaps most importantly, 50 more horsepower from the supercharged V8.

Watch the latest episode of Jay Leno’s Garage in the video below. You’ll need a little over 23 minutes to see the whole thing.

Lincoln MKC spied in final form

Lincoln MKC spied in final form

Lincoln MKC spied in final form

When the Lincoln MKC Concept debuted back in January, it received fairly positive feedback from both Autoblog editors and readers alike, and this bodes well for the production version of the luxury crossover judging by these latest spy shots. Reader Ivan Lo captured a few pictures of some MKC prototypes driving around with minimal camouflage, which gives us our best look yet at the design of this new Escape-based Lincoln.

Based on the spy shots from back in May, we already knew that the production MKC would sport some real door handles, a little side cladding and bigger door mirrors, but these latest shots also show us that the rear quarter windows have been enlarged and the integrated dual exhaust outlets have been replaced by round pipes. This means that the MKC will retain the concept’s narrow headlights and what is arguably Lincoln’s best execution of its split-wing grille. Even better, the rear view confirms the stylish horizontal taillights will remain intact, as well as the Audi-like wraparound liftgate. Since the entire taillight assembly rises along with the liftgate, redundant lights were also added into the rear fascia.

Unfortunately, the low angle of these spy shots leaves us without a view of the interior, but based on its looks alone, the MKC is shaping up to be a promising vehicle for a brand that so badly needs some fresh metal.

Honda, Audi sweep European tin-top championships

Honda, Audi sweep European tin-top championships

Honda, Audi sweep European tin-top championships

Despite his win at the Japanese Grand Prix this weekend, Sebastian Vettel still has another race or two to go before he can claim his fourth consecutive World Championship in Formula 1. Back in Europe, however, this weekend saw several championship titles decided in a variety of tin-top racing series.

In the British Touring Car Championship, Gordon Shedden won the final round at Brands Hatch this weekend, but that wasn’t enough to defend his title. Instead, the ultimate glory went to Andrew Jordan, also driving a Honda Civic, coming in ninth place to take a seven-point victory over Shedden in the final standings. Little wonder then that Honda took the constructors’ championship and the Honda Yuasa Racing team took the teams’ title. Four-time BTCC champion and Fifth Gear co-host Jason Plato, now driving for MG, landed third in the standings.

While Honda dominated the British championship, it was Audi that reigned supreme in mainland Europe. In the Superstars International Series – Italy’s touring-car championship – Gianni Morbidelli drove the Audi RS5 to his fifth title, finishing the season’s final race in a calculated third place behind the BMW racecars of Giovanni Berton and Max Mugelli. It’s the second consecutive win for the RS5 in the Superstars series (Johan Kristoffersson won the title last year), and the second this year following Mike Rockenfeller’s title in the RS5 DTM.

As if that wasn’t enough cause for celebration in the Audi paddock, Thomas Schöffler also drove his R8 LMS to the title in the GT Sprint International Series, the Italian sportscar championship that runs in parallel to the Superstars touring car series. And at the same time, another R8 LMS – driven by Anthony Kumpen, Bert Longin and Maarten Makelberge – narrowly took the trophy in the Belgian Racing Car Championship. It was the third title the R8 LMS has taken in Belgium (following its victories in 2009 and 2010) and the victory capped a weekend packed full of celebrations for Audi Motorsport, whose announcements you can find below.

Don't hold your breath for an Audi RS8

Don't hold your breath for an Audi RS8

Don’t hold your breath for an Audi RS8

There was a time not so long ago when Quattro GmbH produced essentially one model at a time. But that time is behind us. These days it’s expanding into a full-fledged performance division to rival Mercedes-AMG and BMW’s M department. Quattro GmbH is currently building the Audi RS4 Avant, RS5 coupe and cabrio, RS6 Avant, RS7, RS Q3 and the TT RS coupe and roadster – not to mention the R8. And while it’s showing no signs of slowing down, but the latest intel from across the pond suggests we shouldn’t count on an RS version of Audi’s flagship sedan.

This according to Car and Driver, which spoke to Stephan Reil, the chief engineer at Quattro GmbH. Reil says Audi works on a teutonically rigid performance formula: an RS model has to have 20 to 25 percent more power than the existing S version. Considering that the existing S8 makes 512 horsepower and the RS7 a solid 553, we’re not sure Audi really needs anything more powerful. But by Reil’s calculations, the RS8 would need to pack between 630 and 655 hp, which would put it well ahead of rivals like the 550-hp Jaguar XJR, the 540-hp BMW Alpina B7, the 523-hp Maserati Quattroporte and even the new 577-hp Mercedes-Benz S63 AMG – and in league only with the even more powerful S65 AMG, which in its outgoing form produced 630 hp.

The question then comes down to whether there are enough customers lining up for the S65 that Audi would want to poach away from Mercedes. Or perhaps more pertinently, whether it might end up just taking customers from the new Bentley Flying Spur, which is already offering 616 horsepower in an even more prestigious, if less performance-focused package. Either way you look at it, Audi is apparently steering clear.

And that may not be the only thing it’s passing on, either. While previous reports indicated that Audi could put the Nanuk concept into limited production, this same report suggests the crossover supercar would not be in keeping with the company’s latest direction.

Land Rover integrating next LR2/Freelander into LR4/Discovery family

Having trouble wrapping your head around the difference between the Land Rover Freelander (known here as the LR2) and the Range Rover Evoque? So are we. They’re both smaller and somewhat less utilitarian vehicles than their traditional stablemates, and while the LR2 is priced below the Evoque, the difference in base price comes down to less than five grand.

Land Rover has apparently recognized the problem and is keen to fix it moving forward. According to reports coming in from the UK, the next Freelander is set to get a more rugged look to differentiate it from the Evoque, and will be paired with the Discovery in a compartmentalization of the Land Rover lineup.

As has been widely reported, Land Rover is dividing its range into three categories: Luxury vehicles wearing the Range Rover nameplate (including the Evoque and Range Rover Sport), Dual Purpose (comprised principally of the next Defender) and Leisure (to include the replacements for the current Discovery/LR4 and Freelander/LR2).

Of course since the Discovery and Freelander names aren’t currently used in the North American market, the semantics may seem rather irrelevant, but the rapprochement between the next LR2 and LR4 could prove an interesting development.

Nissan bringing Infiniti brand to Japanese market

Ever hear that the best stuff is saved for export? Just ask Japanese luxury car buyers. It’s been decades since Japan’s largest automakers set out to take on Europe’s finest with dedicated luxury brands of their own, but they have kept those brands largely out of their own domestic market and sold them almost exclusively overseas. But that’s beginning to change.

In 2005 Toyota launched the Lexus brand – which it had been exporting since 1989 – in Japan. Honda reportedly planned on bringing its Acura brand to its home market just a few years later, but ended up delaying the move. Now Nissan is reportedly preparing to launch the Infiniti lineup in its own backyard.

This according to a report published in the Japanese business daily Nikkei and now making the rounds of the English-language press. The plan apparently involves offering at least part of the Infiniti model line in domestic Nissan dealers, holding off for the time being on launching a separate dealer network in Japan.

The first model would be the new Infiniti Q50, whose predecessor the G37 had until now been sold in Japan as the Nissan Skyline. Just what that means for that legendary nameplate remains to be seen, particularly since the GT-R was split off from the Skyline family as its own dedicated model. As does the question of what other Infiniti models might follow the Q50 home to roost – a matter that will likely depend on how successful the Q50 sedan proves at fending off the German imports in Japan.

Sometimes, little pieces of automotive history pop up, that are so rare and eccentric, that they’re hard to pass up. This is one of those times. The car shown above is a 1970 IKA Torino 380S, which has had a very special owner. It’ll be crossing the block at the Silverstone Auctions NEC Classic Motor Show Sale on November 15 and 16 in Birmingham, UK.

The Torino was a combination of an AMC Rambler American and Classic, built by an Argentine company born out of a joint venture between Argentina’s government and America’s Kaiser Motors. Sporting a 215-horsepower, 3.8-liter six-cylinder from Jeep under its hood, the rare Torino 380S was limited to under 1,600 units. The luxury minded car had plenty of fans, none more respected than the owner of the car shown above – Juan Manuel Fangio.

Fangio was the original king of Formula One, having won five world championships before Ayrton Senna or Michael Schumacher were even born, and in an era that would have made the events of Ron Howard’s Rush seem as safe as crossing the street. His nickname was El Maestro – The Master – and with good reason. Fangio also had a hand in readying the Torino for sale to the Argentine public, and according to Top Gear, that’s how the F1 ace acquired the silver sedan shown here.

It’s believed that this was El Maestro’s daily driver, although what periods it was used in that capacity are unknown. What we do know is that this not a meticulously restored vehicle, as can be seen in the gallery – it has its fair share of imperfections and issues, earning it a solid buyer-beware rating in our highly unofficial guide to auto auction perusal.

Still, it’s provenance is tough to match for a production car. It also comes sporting Fangio’s international driver’s license, appropriate insurance documents and a look and disposition that we think is absolutely charming. As we said above, it will be up for auction, without reserve, in Birmingham, UK on November 15 and 16. Current projections have it going for 25,000 pounds, or just under $40,000. For a more detailed rundown of Fangio’s 380S, hop over to the Silverstone Auctions’s website.

This is what a 3D-printed liquid metal Ford Torino looks like

Artist Ioan Florea has encapsulated a 1971 Ford Torino with 3-D-printed liquid metal transferred onto the car using technology that he developed, and the result is a stunningly shiny, seamless design.

“The surface has the highest coefficient of reflectivity never achieved before,” Florea told us in an e-mail, using “nano-materials and nano-pigments that create an internal three-dimensional structure and dictate the polymer how to behave.” Sure… We’ll leave it to him to make any more 3-D-printed liquid metal-transferred art pieces.

Florea grew up in Romania, and the motivation behind picking the old Ford as his canvas came from his childhood memories of what an American car is – “big and wide and fascinating,” he says – and the European name of the car itself, which it shares with an Italian city.

Take a few minutes to gaze at his Torino in the gallery we included.

BMW X1 testing is underway

It was just a few weeks ago that we got our first glimpse of the next-generation BMW X1, riding around on a flatbed. Now, we have the first batch of images of the small crossover moving under its own steam.

Like the previous round of photos, BMW’s psychedelic camouflage is on hand to obscure sheetmetal details, but our intrepid spies still managed to discover a bit about the new X1. It’s internal code-name will be F48, and it will sit on the same platform as the next-generation Mini and the BMW 1 Series GT. And for those keeping track at home, those are both front-drive platforms.

The reasoning for the X1′s new layout, though, is understandable. Front-wheel drive is more space efficient and affordable, which are kind of big deals to customers. The next X1 won’t be limited to its front wheels, though, as BMW’s xDrive system is almost a certainty on higher-end trims.

We can expect to see the second-generation X1 on the auto show stage at the 2015 Frankfurt Motor Show as a 2016 model.

Nissan’s new GT-R boss says next car will go for more volume

Since its introduction in 2008, the Nissan GT-R has seen a steady increase of power and price almost every year, but the big news for the next-gen supercar might be an increase in production. Automotive News recently spoke with newly appointed GT-R chief engineer Kinishi Tanuma who said Nissan needs “more of a volume car.” Nissan has sold a little more than 2,000 GT-Rs in the US since 2012 – 1,188 last year and 952 so far this year.

Of course, a key limiting factor in the GT-R’s production is its hand-built engine. Currently, only four people are qualified to build the GT-R’s twin-turbo V6, but Tanuma says a fifth is in training. Even if production numbers are raised, Nissan also wants to add more quality and value into the GT-R. There is still no word as to what kind of timeframe Nissan is looking to start pumping out more GT-Rs, but with a new Nismo model rumored to be bringing a two-second 0-60 time, demand is sure to be on the rise.

Chevy recalling 1,600 Sonic subcompacts over fire risk

General Motors is voluntarily recalling more than 1,600 model-year 2013-2014 Chevrolet Sonic sedans and hatchbacks due to potentially faulty fuel tank strap welds, the The Detroit News reports. According to GM, “If the strap bracket separates, the fuel tank would rest on the exhaust pipe or plastic fuel tank shield, and owners may hear a rattling or scraping noise. If the fuel tank shield and fuel filler neck do not support the tank, it could separate from the car. If the tank is punctured and there is a source of ignition, a fire may occur.”

GM reportedly discovered the issue at its assembly plant and does not know of any complaints, injuries or incidents resulting from the issue. Since many of the cars are still at dealerships, dealers will proactively make necessary repairs. We have yet to see an official recall notice from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, presumably since the agency has temporarily stopped issuing notices because of Washington’s government shutdown.

I have been strapped behind the iconic Momo Prototipo steering wheel for a little more than an hour, all windows down as I carve my way up a rugged canyon during an unusually warm Southern California evening, and I am overwhelmed with emotion. My heart is pounding out of my chest, my breathing is heavy and my palms are sweaty because I am completely absorbed by this wondrous machine.

After waiting patiently for nearly four years, I am finally behind the wheel of a classic Porsche 911 restored, modified and tuned by Singer Vehicle Design. The vehicle that surrounds me never rolled off an automaker’s assembly line in its current configuration, yet its physical appearance is timeless, build quality breathtaking and driving dynamics peerless.

To this automotive enthusiast, it is the most alluring vehicle in the world.

Audi CVT suit settlement given green light, 64,000 cars covered

Audi drivers, listen up. If you bought or leased a 2002-06 model-year A4 or A6 with a factory-installed Continuously Variable Transmission (CVT) that failed, you may be entitled to reimbursement under a recently settled class-action lawsuit with corporate parent Volkswagen.

According to Automotive News, the settlement covers about 64,000 vehicles and alleges that “manufacturing and design problems caused the transmissions to fail and left owners stuck with repair costs.” While the suit also argues Audi was aware of these issues (going so far as to hide that knowledge from consumers), the settlement stops short of acknowledging any wrongdoing by the German automaker.

Audi drivers are eligible for a cash reimbursement if their CVT repairs occurred within 10 years or 100,000 miles of the date they bought or leased the vehicle before June 19, 2013. To be eligible for compensation, drivers must submit a claim form (found here) with supporting documents by November 18.

Drivers who fail to meet the cash criteria may still be eligible for free repairs or replacements of their CVT, or a trade-in reimbursement for lost value. However, the settlement excludes those claiming personal injury or property damage.

Ringo Starr's Facel Vega could raise half million at auction

Ringo Starr’s Facel Vega could raise half million at auction

John, Paul, George and Ringo, the four men that made up The Beatles, lived in an interesting time when it came to the cars on offer. Power was cheap and fuel was cheaper, while the designs were some of the finest in automotive history. With fame and money, they could have nearly any car the 1960s auto industry could come up with, up to and including what you see above – a 1964 Facel Vega Facel II. This particular example was owned by Ringo Starr, and will be going up for auction at Bonhams in London, on Sunday, December 1.

The Vega Facel II, was the rock-and-roll era’s equivalent of a Bentley Continental GT Speed – a brutally powerful, but supremely comfortable four-place coupe that didn’t skimp on style. Power came from a thumping 6.3-liter Chrysler Typhoon V8 that turned out up to 390 horsepower and could scoot the Facel II to a reported top speed of 150 miles per hour.

Suitable for a member of a band that was “more popular than Jesus,” Ringo’s Vega was special. It’s one of only two Facel II examples built with a 6.7-liter V8 in place of the standard 6.3-liter mill, which means it should be quicker than the numbers indicated above. It was also one of only 26 right-hand-drive Facel II coupes to be produced, making this a very unique example of an exceedingly rare car.

It is expected to sell for anywhere from 300,000 to 350,000 pounds ($484,770 to $565,565, at today’s rates). Take a look below for the full press release from Bonhams, and then jump up top for a few pictures of Ringo and his FV.

European automakers gear up for Brazilian production

Brazil is the place to be, apparently. Toyota has been investing in the South American country, as has BMW, which announced a $261 million investment in October 2012. The high-end immigration is only set to continue, as Mercedes-Benz and Jaguar-Land Rover have both announced plans to set up manufacturing operations there.

Mercedes is the big news here, as its new facility will see the German manufacturer invest 170-million euros for production of its next-generation C-Class and upcoming GLA-Class. “Brazil is an important future market. With our local production we accept the challenge and take on the competition,” noted Andreas Renschler, Management Board member for Production and Procurement at Mercedes-Benz Cars and Mercedes-Benz Vans. Production is expected to begin by 2016.

Jaguar-Land Rover, meanwhile, isn’t so concrete in its plans. The news of its investment in South America comes from a job posting for a plant quality manager in Brazil that was picked up by the UK’s AutoCar. “Portuguese language skills will be definite advantage” for interested candidates, according to the job listing. The want ad follows on the heels of remarks by Jaguar Land Rover’s Dr. Ralph Speth, who said there are “very intensive discussions” with Brazil’s government. Unlike Mercedes, there’s no mention of which vehicles will be produced in South America, although AutoCar thinks the Freelander, sold in the US as the LR2, is a leading contender.

Take a look below for the official press release from Toyota.

2013 McLaren MP4-12C Spider

2013 McLaren MP4-12C Spider

2013 McLaren MP4-12C Spider

Our First Drive of the McLaren MP4-12C Spider was nearly one year ago, when the automaker invited us to Malaga, Spain, for its introduction. While we had plenty of seat time during our initial orientation, nothing tops wringing out an exotic in your own backyard when you can focus on the vehicle and not worry about learning the apexes on a foreign track. Last week, McLaren Automotive asked us if we wanted to spend some time with its new Spider on domestic soil. We couldn’t turn that down, especially when learned the venue was the 13-turn infield circuit at Southern California’s Auto Club Speedway.

As a refresher, McLaren engineered the MP4-12C in coupe form with an open roof car in mind. That means the carbon-fiber tub needed no extra strengthening for Spider duty, a role that fits a power-operated two-piece folding carbon-fiber roof overhead (it raises and lowers in just 17 seconds, at speeds of up to 20 miles per hour) and features new buttresses reinforced with steel for rollover protection. The weight penalty is but a mere 88 pounds, meaning Spider performance is nearly identical to the coupe.

Despite my familiarity with the track, McLaren dropped a factory co-pilot in the vehicle with me. While I normally prefer to drive with an empty seat to my side, it was informative listening to his take on the Spider’s various drive modes and settings as I put the exotic through its paces. Involuntarily, I was first out on a cold and slightly damp track (I’m driving the black car with a closed-face helmet), certainly not an ideal situation in a 616-horsepower, rear-wheel drive two-seater, but my worries were unwarranted as the racing line dried quickly allowing me to push the 12C Spider to its limit.

The Active Dynamics Panel, between the passengers, presents the driver with two console-mounted three-position dials allow the suspension and powertrain to be configured independently of each other, in three different modes: Normal, Sport and Track. Switching between the settings brings drastic changes that transform the McLaren from a comfortable GT to a purebred racer (think Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde). While I tried all of the combinations, and used the Normal mode on a street run later in the day, I preferred everything in its sharpest Track setting for the circuit.

The Spider is fitted with a standard seven-speed, automated dual-clutch SSG gearbox. When on a racing circuit, I typically put this type of transmission in track mode and let the on-board computers do the shifting. I wasn’t overly impressed with how the McLaren was shifting on its own (it appeared to be caught off-guard at times), so I switched over to manual mode. Most sports cars have a single paddle on each side of the wheel tasked with gear changes. The MP4-12C uses a rocker that passes through the back of the steering wheel. Think of it like a seesaw, which allows one hand to shift the gearbox (with a satisfying mechanical ‘click’) both up and down by pulling or pressing on the paddles. The design works brilliantly, with shifts that are nearly instantaneous in both directions. Once I gave it a try, I never went back to any automatic mode.

The McLaren accelerates out of the corners at a dizzying rate that substantiates its sub-three second 0-60 sprint (some sports cars, like the Nissan GT-R, don’t feel seat-of-the pants as quick at speed as their test numbers) and allows it to run neck-to-neck with the Ferrari 458 Italia. I was concerned with that much power going through just two contact patches, so I was needlessly cautious on the throttle during the first few corner exits. The Spider puts its power down brilliantly, and brief moments of oversteer coming out of the twisty sections were easy to control with a touch of steering input.

Carbon-ceramic brakes are optional, but all of the test cars at the track were wearing the standard ventilated and cross-drilled iron rotors hidden inside the optional lightweight 10-spoke forged alloys, that provided formidable stopping power under the track conditions. The MP4-12C uses its (defeatable) four-mode ESC system to close the caliper on the inside wheel while braking into a corner to provide brake steer, thus allowing later brake applications and earlier power delivery on exit. Its effect was unnoticed from the driver’s seat, but it unquestionably improved stability and helped to eliminate understeer in the tight sections.

There was little to fault the McLaren with dynamically or mechanically, but I did have a few nitpicks. First, I would have preferred more aggressively bolstered seats to hold my torso in place during the drive (or install six-point harnesses). Second, the wide door sills combined with the trick dihedral doors made ingress/egress a learned procedure. Lastly, I would choose the optional Pirelli PZero Corsa tires as my primary fitment because the stock PZero rubber, although grippy, was the weak link after 20 minutes of lapping.

Overall, the MP4-12C Spider was one of the most enjoyable and capable street cars that I have ever driven on a racing circuit. Acceleration, braking and handling were all first-rate, and it seemed effortlessly up to the challenge of being driven hard – a real natural. While many sports car owners with track aspirations avoid the roofless models of their favorite exotics as they are compromised in weight and performance, McLaren’s new retractable hardtop Spider doesn’t seem to concede in any measurable category. In fact, its arrival almost makes its couple sibling outmoded.

BMW rethinks all-wheel-drive M cars

BMW rethinks all-wheel-drive M cars

BMW rethinks all-wheel-drive M cars

BMW M hasn’t been able to decide whether it wants to jump on the all-wheel-drive bandwagon or not (with the exceptions of the X5 M and the X6 M, which are based on AWD architecture). That might be changing though, since M’s president Friedrich Nitschke recently realized that 70 to 80 percent of Mercedes-Benz E63 AMGs are ordered with all-wheel drive. Earlier this year, Nitschke said that there were no new AWD M models planned, so this comes as somewhat of a surprise.

“On our cars we are thinking of all-wheel drive, but it won’t come before we get the successor of the M5 and M6,” Nitschke said in a Motoring report. “That’s the timing and it’s not practical to react in the current life cycles.”

Nitschke says that obtaining a faster 0-60 miles-per-hour time isn’t why BMW M is considering AWD option for the M5 and M6. But one has to wonder if that’s part of the division’s reasoning when the Audi RS6 Avant and RS7, the Porsche Panamera Turbo and the top Mercedes E63 AMG all perform the sprint in under 4.0 seconds with AWD, when the fastest M5 can only do it in 4.2 seconds.

The M division traditionally has been shaped by rear-wheel drive sports cars and sedans with powerful, naturally aspirated engines of bespoke designs that didn’t make their way into regular production BMWs. In recent years, however, M has been straying from its roots, replacing the M5′s Formula One-derived V10 with a more pedestrian (but more powerful) twin-turbo V8, coming out with the aforementioned AWD M sports utility vehicle and crossover and equipping the upcoming M3 sedan and M4 coupe with a twin-turbocharged straight six to replace the current naturally aspirated V8.

Before the current generation M5 was released in late 2011, BMW had reportedly been toying with plans to make an AWD version, but this latest report confirms that BMW will wait until the next generation comes out.

For the M purists out there, Nitschke reportedly assures you that the M3 and M4 will “never” come with AWD, because, he says, “To accelerate out of corners with this rear-end architecture concept is so fantastic that it [all-wheel drive] is not needed.” Instead of taking his word on that, we’ll just wait another four to six months and see if the story has changed.

Mustang Cobra Jet prototype garners $200k for charity at Barrett-Jackson

A few weeks ago we brought you news of a one-off Mustang Cobra Jet that Ford was donating to charity. The car was set to be auctioned off by Barrett-Jackson in Las Vegas to benefit the National Multiple Sclerosis Society. Now that auction has taken place, bringing in an impressive $200,000 for MS research.

That’s a lot of zeros for a Mustang, much less one you can’t even drive on the street. But the unique pony car, bearing serial number 2014 BJMS CJXX1, packs a 5.0-liter supercharged V8, competition gearbox, wheelie bar, roll cage… all you could want, in short, in a turn-key drag racer. And all that for a good cause.
